As General Editor of the Neue Bach Ausgabe, the complete edition of Bach's works, the author commands a familiarity with the sources equalled by few scholars in our time, and it is on the basis of this knowledge that he presents a totally novel picture of Bach, the choral conductor – a picture that shows to what extent the genius of Bach's improvisation must have ruled his own performances.
