Dürr is the first to present a detailed discussion of Bach's cantatas from the point of view of the findings of modern Bach scholarship and of the true historical sequence in which these works were written. As General Editor of the Neue Bach Ausgabe, the complete edition of Bach's works, the author commands a familiarity with the sources equalled by few scholars in our time, and it is on the basis of this knowledge that he presents a totally novel picture of Bach, the choral conductor – a picture that shows to what extent the genius of Bach's improvisation must have ruled his own performances.
